These Filled Croissants From Kyoto Are the Perfect Afternoon Snack

Did you know that Kyoto happens to be the city that invests the most in bread and pastry production? If you ever find yourself in the area, we recommend visiting these two shops that sell a selection of sweet croissants with an or sweet jam. Their season-limited menus and matcha flavors are also a must-try. Savor the crunchy texture and roasted scent of these pastries!

was formerly an old Machiya townhouse that was transformed into a café. They serve a wide variety of menu items, from open sandwiches with plenty of Kyoto vegetables to hors d’oeuvres.

Ancroissant (matcha red bean paste / ¥280). This croissant has Hokkaido natto and fresh cream with red bean paste. It has a rich matcha flavor and a creamy taste.

“Since the croissants come in a cute size that fits in your palm, there are people who order about two or three of them then compare flavors. It is also a great souvenir to bring home to family and friends,” says the staff.

The first floor is a stylish café, while the second floor is a select shop called “by colors” with household goods and accessories.

It is a modernly-renovated store that used to be a watch store.

is a bakery that specializes in croissants and pies. These are baked fresh daily by a female craftsperson who polished her skills at a hotel in Hokkaido. They serve about 10 kinds of desserts and sandwiches made with high-quality Hokkaido wheat and fermented butter here.

Matcha Red Bean Paste Croissant (¥280). Plenty of Uji matcha from Kichoen in Ujidawara, Kyoto is blended in the dough.

Red Bean Paste Butter Croissant (¥290). Refined red bean paste and melt-in-your-mouth buttercream are perfectly balanced in this croissant.

The Croque Monsieur with Homemade White Sauce and Cheese (¥280) is also popular.

The croissants and pies are placed on a round table, while the sandwiches are in the showcase.
