These Kanazawa Markets in Ishikawa Have the Answer to Your Seafood Cravings

No need to look anywhere else!


In
Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture, there are several markets where you can purchase fresh fish as well as restaurants where you may enjoy delicious seafood dishes. The most popular of these is Ohmicho-ichiba. This is where most people visiting Kanazawa go to.


This time, we visited the
Port of Kanazawa and Central Wholesale Market Area. We share with you the different stores that local people recommend in the area below. 


Kani Izakaya Benkichi


Snow crab purchased by the chief’s good judge is famous at
Kani Izakaya Benkichi. Other than the all-you-can-eat boiled snow crab (no time limit; reservation needed; ¥5,500), you may also enjoy the snow crab full course with baked crab and crab hot pot set (reservation needed; ¥6,800) all year round. 


The
Benkichi no Hampanee Ikuradon (Benkichi Wicked Salmon Caviar Rice Bowl) (¥1,300) is also quite famous among customers. It is a dish that consists of vinegared rice and topped with a healthy amount of salmon caviar. When you order this, you’ll be sure to enjoy the freshness in every bite!

Kani Izakaya Benkichi is located at 5-7 Onomachi, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture and is open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily except on Wednesdays. You may contact them at +81-76-268-8078.


Aburayo Shoten


Aburayo Shoten
is a traditional store that’s been running for 300 years. Blowfish ovary, which is only permitted to be produced in Ishikawa Prefecture, and seafood pickled with fermented rice branare available here. The owner of the store is especially proud of their Kanazawa Kaisen Nukazuke (Kanazawa Seafood Fermented Rice Bran) (¥3,000). It includes octopus, sweet shrimp, and ivory shells caught at the Port of Kanazawa.


Kanazawa Kaisen Nukazuke (Kanazawa Seafood Fermented Rice Bran) (
¥3,000). The octopus and sweet shrimp, fresh that can be eaten as sashimi, are used. 


Aburayo Shoten is located at 2-1-33 Kanaiwakita, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture and is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. daily except on Sundays and Japanese holidays. You may contact them at +81-76-267-0031.


Kappo Hoshozushi


Kappo Hoshozushi
uses products of Ishikawa Prefecture in their dishes. These include products from the Port of Kanazawa, fresh fish caught in Noto and Kaga, rice from Noto, and local soy sauce made in Ono. Since this place is located within a port town, there is a wide variety of seafood available here.

There are nine pieces of sushi in the weekday-limited A Lunch (
¥2,200). The Omakase Course (¥3,300) is also available all time.

Uogashi Shokudo Central Market Store


At
Uogashi Shokudo Central Market Store, you can order set meals and seafood rice bowls for around ¥1,000. The store is very popular among local citizens as it serves cheap and delicious food. There are seven stores all in all in the city. Part of the reason why their menu items are sold at a low price is because they purchase large amounts of products directly from the market.  


Osashimi to Osakana Zukushi Teishoku (¥1,000) is one of the more popular dishes of the store. It includes two kinds of boiled fish, sashimi, grilled fish, and tempura. 


Uogashi Shokudo Central Market Store is located at 4-14-8 Sainen, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture and is open from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays except on Wednesdays (the next day if Wednesday is a Japanese holiday), and until 3 p.m. and from 5 p.m. on weekends and Japanese holidays. Ryoshi Sushi Shokudo Dodonto Nihonkai


Sushi with largely cut fresh fish from the market is available at
Ryoshi Sushi Shokudo Dodonto Nihonkai. For lunch, there are set menus (¥850~) with sushi and tempura. They also offer Kaisen Chirashizushi (seafood sushi bowl) (¥1,000~), which has fish overflowing from the bowl.


You can enjoy Hilgendorf saucord, button shrimp, medium fatty tuna, crab, salmon caviar, and minced tuna with onion in the
Jozushi 8 Kan Kani to Ikura no Negitoro Nokkemori Set (Eight pieces of sushi with crab, salmon caviar and minced tuna with onion) (¥1,600).


Ryoshi Sushi Shokudo Dodonto Nihonkai is located at 4-14-8 Sainen, Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture and is open from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. on weekdays except on Wednesdays (the next day if Wednesday is a Japanese holiday), and until 3 p.m. and from 5 p.m. on weekends and Japanese holidays. Mawaru Sushi Ponta


Mawaru Sushi Ponta
is a store located in front of the market, where the owner purchases fresh fish every day. The Yokozuna Set (¥1,280) has 15 pieces of sushi and comes with free Arajiru (miso soup with fish). You can enjoy freshly made sushi here every time you order.

The C Lunch (Tokujo) (¥1,800) includes 10 pieces of sushi with high-quality fish such as otoro (belly of tuna with  high-fat content), Hilgendorf saucord, and button shrimp (or red shrimp).
