More than just a Japanese restaurant, Ryotei Yachiyo, located near Nanzenji Temple, offers traditional Japanese dishes such as kaiseki course meal and yudofu hot pot tofu dish with a view of a beautiful Japanese garden created by famous Japanese garden architect Jihee Ogawa.

Yudofu Gozen-Take (¥3,300)

To create the smooth texture of the tofu, fukutoyo, a soybean from the Shiga Prefecture, is combined with Kyoto’s natural spring water. If you order the Yudofu Gozen-Take course, you can savor eight dishes such as sesame tofu and yuba or tofu skin.

“When cooking a simple tofu hot pot dish, broth is important. Our broth is made from sea tangle of Hokkaido and dried bonito of Kagoshima. It enhances the taste of tofu,” says the head chef, Toshiyuki Motomichi.

The Japanese garden that blends with the surrounding landscape covers about 330sqm.

If you want the best seats, get those that front the garden, so you can view the autumn foliage from late November to early December.

The garden is illuminated after sunset.

The restaurant is adjacent to the Yachiyo hotel.

In this course, you can savor 10 dishes. “The tofu we serve is homemade sagadofu. The feature of tofu is that it is smooth and feels good on the tongue. But even so, it has plenty of body,” says Tada, the manager.

The restaurant has two buildings: Shinkan (New Building) and Honkan (Main Building). If you would like to enjoy the beautiful garden, you should choose Honkan (Main building).

The elegant garden covers about 3300sqm.

In this garden, you can find pines, a bamboo grove, and maple trees. The maples are at their best from late November to early December.

Yudofu Sagano is located in Arashiyama, a famous place for yudofu, just like in Nanzenji. From here, you’ll be able to visit famous temples such as Tenryu-ji temple and Hogon-ji temple easily.

In the Shojin Ryori course, you can taste seven kinds of vegetables dishes, gomadofu (tofu infused with sesame), and Nanakusa yudofu.

“The tofu we serve is specially prepared. We hope the healthy yudofu with vegetables, such as Chinese cabbage, shiitake mushroom, brassica, warms you,” says Yuko Hasegawa, the manager of Seigenin.

The Japanese tatami room has a pleasant view of the well-kept garden. When you go out to the external corridor with the boarded floors, you’ll be greeted by the beautiful Kyoyochi Pond.

There are carps swimming in the tranquil pond.

In late November, the high season of autumn leaves, the scenery of the pond is indescribable.
