This Cafe in Kyoto Used to Be a School Dormitory
It's near a lot of tourist spots, too!
30 Hiranokamihacchoyanagi-cho, Kita Ward, Kyoto City
Open daily from 11a.m. to 7 p.m. (last order is at 6 p.m.) except on Tuesdays.
How to get there: It’s a 10-minute bus ride via City Bus 204 or 205 from Kitaoji Station on the Kyoto Municipal Subway Karasuma Line, then a 5-minute walk from the Kinugasako-mae bus stop.
After establishing the popular ROCCA & FRIENDS cafe in Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture, the same company opened a second café in Kyoto, Kita Ward named BY TWOTONE. Located inside a renovated school dormitory, the cafe evokes a sense of nostalgia with its cozy interiors, and serves up an education in the form of coffee, deli plates, and sweets.
If you’re looking for something more filling, try their CURRY PLATE (ROCCA & FRIENDS, ¥1,280). The chicken curry plate is fragrant with spices, and the soup is made from a chickpea paste called hummus, which comes with homemade pickles.
While the food plates are popular, the baked sweets (around 13 of them) and the ice cream are also must-try items.
Get a ¥100 discount each from regular price if you have your coffee and baked sweets to go.
BY TWOTONE is located near popular tourist destinations such as Hirano Shrine, Kinkakuji, and Kitano Tenmangu Shrine.
