You Have to Visit These Food Stalls the Next Time You’re in Fukuoka

Enjoy good food in good company!

Fukuoka is popular for many things, most notably, its open-air food stalls. While there are plenty of them to around, here are a few stalls you don’t want to miss:

Tenjin Nigiwai Yatai Tecchan

Tenjin Nigiwai Yatai Tecchan operates in the corner of a food stall street that’s bustling with people.

The master, who trained at a Chinese restaurant for 15 years, provides pork-bone based ramen and seasoned cod roe ramen, which are popular among the tourists, in addition to the Chinese dishes.

Mapo Tofu, a Sichuan dish with tofu and minced meat (¥700), is one of the popular dishes in the restaurant. Try pouring it on the noodle (Kaedama). Another must-try is the fried ramen flavored with Shanghai oyster sauce. Enjoy the unique collaboration of Hakata and Chinese food when you eat at Tenjin Nigiwai Yatai Tecchan.

Rémy-san chi

Open from 6:30 p.m. to 12:30 a.m. (last order is at 12 a.m.) from Tuesday to Saturday.

Rémy-san chi is the only food stall operated by a foreigner in Fukuoka. Many customers visit this stall to enjoy their conversation with the French owner, Mr. Rémy, who speaks fluent Japanese.

Dishes such as Escargot (¥760), Steamed Mussels with Wine (¥650), Cheese Fondue Toast (¥540), Bouillabaisse Ramen and Soup (both ¥1,080 *limited servings) make up the menu.

They also have a wine from Chapoutier that matches the dishes, red and white wines (¥430), and Heartland draft beers (¥540).

Hakata Fuguchantei

The master procures four types of fresh blowfish from the market, using his experience and personal connections. The menu includes Blowfish Tempura Noodle (¥650), Roasted Blowfish (¥400), Blowfish Porridge (¥650), and Fried Blowfish (¥450).

You can enjoy a lightly roasted fin sake Hire-zake (¥500), Lemon Highball (¥450) and Calpis Highball (¥250). Enjoy blowfish dishes in a casual interior atmosphere.

Yatai Mami-chan

Yatai Mami-chan has been running for 30 years in a street two minutes away from Tenjin Station. Mami-chan attracts not only the local customers, but also tourists from abroad, giving the food stall a lively atmosphere all day long.

The outstanding point is the abundance of menu. Along with the classic menu items such as Oden, a Japanese stew made by simmering various ingredients (¥100), Pork-Bone Based Ramen (¥500), and Motsunabe, a hotpot stew made with offal and vegetables, (¥800), they also offer more than 50 dishes including original dishes like Chinese Napoli, udon with a ketchup spaghetti flavor (¥600), and Mapo Tofu (¥500).

They also have a local beer named Fukuoka Zukuri (¥550) that uses barley malt grown in Fukuoka.
