Here's a fun fact for match lovers out there: In Japan, one of the three major teas is called Uji, which also happens to be a town in Kyoto.

Only a 60-minute train ride from JR Osaka Station, Uji is home to four awesome places that should be part of your Japan itinerary. We hope you find something that’s your cup of tea!

First stop: Ujigami-jinja or Ujigami Shrine

Take pleasure in a relaxing stroll at Ujigami-jinja, the oldest standing shrine of its kind in Japan and a recognized UNESCO World Heritage site. To express the people’s gratitude for an abundant tea harvest, the shrine holds an annual festival.

Enjoy a beautiful view of the Uji River while sipping a warm cup of tea at Nakamura Tokichi – Byodoin Branch. Their original, ocha no furikake, is their bestselling pasalubong. Each pack is priced at ¥1,080 and comes in two flavors. One is a plain furikake made from tencha leaves, and the other is laced with umekobucha leaves mixed with plum, kelp, and a little bit of salt.

Third stop: Byodoin Temple

Another UNESCO World Heritage site in Japan, the Byodoin Temple has been standing for almost a thousand years since the Eisho 7 (1052).

Fourth stop: Tsujiri Hee’s Main Branch

Since 1960, Tsujiri Hee has been a part of Uji’s rich tea culture. The factory with over a hundred years of history was turned into a cafe that serves appetizing matcha sweets and gives customers a unique opportunity to experience making green tea powder from leaves.

Savor freshly made matcha desserts like this Uji matcha parfait for ¥1,728. With delectable add-ons such as jelly, chiffon, flakes, ice cream, and chocolate-coated Japanese chestnuts, this parfait is indeed a wonderful treat!
