The Tsuruhashi area in Osaka is filled with many yakiniku (Japanese-style BBQ) restaurants. Every day, the mouthwatering aroma of grilled meats permeates the air, inviting crowds of hungry locals and tourists to the establishments along the west side of the JR and Kintetsu Line Tsuruhashi Station.
The Tsuruhashi yakiniku is said to have originated from the horumon (beef or pork offal) yakiniku, which became popular in the black market during post-war Japan. In this article, we introduce some of the most famous restaurants in the area that let you enjoy authentic yakiniku while sightseeing.
Upon entering Arai, you’ll be surprised to find customers wearing goggles while eating their food. The practice was started by previous customers who brought goggles, so they could enjoy their food without worrying about the smoke from the yakiniku grill. Since then, the restaurant decided to provide its customers with goggles as part of the dining experience.
Their grilled meats are marinated in a “sauce that matches the meat” to give customers a full range of umami flavors. Some of the highly recommended dishes of the restaurant include the Akasen (fourth stomach) meat (¥1,728), Harami (outside skirt) (¥1,728), Baniku no Sakurayukke (Yukhoe horse meat) (¥1,836), and Shiotan (salted tongue) (¥2,484). They also offer a Yakiniku Set that contains various kinds of meat at an affordable price of ¥1,728.
Honetsuki Kalbi (Short ribs, ¥2,052). All the yakiniku menus have a portion of 200 grams for each person.

At Yakiniku Sosomon, the grills are oil drums and the tables are beer cases. The restaurant is also quite popular for serving amazing Korean-style yakiniku, A5-ranked Kuroge Wagyu Japanese beef, and drinks in interesting IV-like drips.
The Tsukeharami (Marinated Outside Skirt) (¥1,620, front) is the most popular item on their menu.
Nichinan Mochi Buta no Butahere (Pork Tenderloin) (¥1,080), Marinated US Beef Kalbi Ribs (¥,2160), Soso Set (¥2,160), and Beef Tessa (sashimi) (from ¥1,296) are also available at the restaurant.

Yakiniku Hormone Sora Tsuruhashi Main Branch
Yakiniku Hormone Sora Tsuruhashi Main Branch started out as a small restaurant. Gradually, it became popular and opened a total of five branches in its neighborhood, including one in Dotonbori. Their popularity mainly stems from the fresh and rare horumon that they serve, flavorful sauces they custom-make for their meats, the serving size, and the affordable price at which they offer their dishes.
You might have to wait in line before being served though, since the restaurant accommodates lots of customers each day.
Harami (Outside Skirt) (¥650, front in photo) is the restaurant’s most popular dish and tastes rich and tender.
Hagishi (¥350, top left in photo) consists of chewy jaw meat. Other menu items such as the juicy Tsurami (¥450) (cheek meat), Hoso (¥450) with sweet fat meat, and tender Hachinosu (¥450) with matching sweet sauce are also bestsellers.
This is what it looks like inside the first branch. The portion of each order is about 60 to 70 grams so that customers can enjoy different types of items.
Since hoso is a type of horumon that has a lot of fat, putting it on the grill will generate a lot of smoke.

Tsuruhashi Yakiniku Kintaro is more popular among the locals rather than the tourists for its luxurious Saga beef and A5-ranked beef. These meats and other affordable lunch set meals are served at a casual setting and in small portions. Their Yakiniku Set Meal (¥918) comes with 120 grams of loin and outside skirt, rice, miso soup, kimchi, and a salad.
The Kintaro Set (¥3,218, good for 1 to 2 people) includes special meats like loin and salted tongue.
