These Are the Best Grilled Eel Restaurants in Nagoya, According to a Food Magazine

In Japan, restaurants are often recognized in food magazines for their interesting dishes and excellent services. Among these magazines is the Michelin Guide Aichi, Gifu, Mie 2019 Special Edition, which came out last May 17 and featured 628 restaurants that succeed in offering Nagoya-meshi or the “taste of Nagoya” to its customers.


In this article, we introduce three of these restaurants which serve hitsumabushi (a rice bowl topped with eel). Make sure to check out these restaurants the next time you’re in Nagoya!


Atsuta Houraiken, Honten (Main Restaurant)


It has been more than 100 years since Atsuta Houraiken opened its doors to the public. The restaurant has even gained a loyal fanbase for its delicious eel dishes. They make a conscious effort in pleasing their customers by only using high-quality eels according to the season.


Atsuta Houraiken was established in 1873 and even comes up in Tokaidochu Hizakurige, a famous picaresque novel.


They cook the eels only upon order so that customers can enjoy them freshly-grilled, which is actually when they’re the most delicious. The chefs who work here are well-trained in the Houraiken-style of cooking, which sets the taste of their dishes apart from other restaurants. They also add a secret sauce, which has a slightly sweet taste, to their meals.


The Hitsumabushi (¥3,900) is cooked with high-grade charcoal and has a scent that fills your mouth.


Atsuta Houraiken, Honten (Main Restaurant) is located at 503 Godo-cho, Atsuta District, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture and is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. except on Wednesdays and the second and fourth Thursdays of the month (If those days fall on a Japanese holiday, they will be open). Sumiyaki no Mise UNATOYO


Sumiyaki no Mise UNATOYO
opened in 1960 at Mizuho District, a calm and quiet residential area. The restaurant is known for slicing its eels swiftly and cooking them upon order for the best taste. Mikawa soy sauce, which has been aged for a long time, is used in their sauce to create a deeper and richer flavor for your taste buds. The rice is likewise cooked upon order so that customers can enjoy hot and delicious meals at the restaurant.


The Mabushi-Don (¥3,600) consists of an entire eel with pickles fermented in rice bran bed called “nukadoko.”


Sumiyaki no Mise UNATOYO is located at 3-40 Toyooka, Mizuho District, Nagoya City, Aichi Prefecture and is open from 1 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. except on Mondays (closed on Tuesday if Monday is a Japanese holiday), and 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Sundays and Japanese holidays. Sumiyaki Unafuji


Sumiyaki Unafuji
is located near Tsuruma Park, which is a popular sightseeing spot during the cherry blossom season. The restaurant cooks their carefully-selected Ao Unagi (a high-quality bluish eel) using high-grade charcoal, to make it slightly crispy on the outside and fluffy inside. This is paired with Niigata-produced rice, which is cooked slightly hard to match the eel. In addition to this, the rich sauce makes the eel even more flavorful.


The restaurant is so popular that many people line up in front of it before it opens. The scent of their fatty and rich Ao Unagi is unlike any other, so don’t miss the chance to try it!


One serving of Kimo iri Hitsumabushi (¥7,090, the price may change) contains seven eel livers and one and a half eels. This dish is served for a limited amount of customers daily.
