How Do Japanese Women Choose Christmas Gifts for Their Partners?

Better to plan ahead of time to avoid the Christmas rush.

The year ends in less than two months, which means Christmas is just around the corner. Every couple has their own way of celebrating the holidays—seeing the beautiful illuminations, having a special dinner, and many more. The Christmas season is truly an exciting time, that some people are already looking forward to it. It’s also probably the busiest time of the year, which is why it’s best to prepare your holiday plans and start your Christmas shopping ahead of time.

In this article, we introduce the latest trends in gift-giving and the average amount ladies spend when buying gifts for their partners.

How much do women spend on Christmas gifts for their partners?

Gifts vary depending on the partner’s age and taste. If you’re having trouble picking one, decide on your budget and stick to it when choosing a present. Sometimes, even though you only want to make your partner happy, buying them expensive gifts adds pressure when they pick yours. So as not to make that mistake, take note of the average amount ladies spend when buying gifts for their partners.

According to a research study held last year among males and females from ages 20 to 69, ¥8,477 is the average budget allotted for Christmas gifts overall. The ladies usually spend an average of ¥7,088. However, the responses start from ¥3,000 to ¥30,000, which is a substantially wide price range. Prices also differ significantly if the partners are working or studying and if they’re married or dating. Women’s income is also an important factor. A general rule of thumb is to look for items your partners can use daily, which won’t make them worry about the price. You can opt to buy fashion items, leather products, and stationery. Consider the gift you might receive from them, so both of you won’t feel any pressure to spend too much during the holidays.

Use your taste when selecting gift items for your partner

Once you’ve decided on your budget, it’s time to think about what exactly you want to give. According to a department store adviser, they recommend women to use their own style and buy gifts that their partners will probably never pick for themselves. Choose products with a motif that you think will complement your partner, like leather products with a sophisticated design, stylish planners and pens that can be used at work, or knit ties with a pop of color or an unusual pattern that can make them stand out.

Additionally, most men consider their hobbies as their first love. So, it’s a good idea to give them something they can enjoy like high-quality earphones, for those who listen to music while commuting or exercising, or multi-purpose jackets that can also be used casually, for those who love the outdoors. This may even help strengthen your relationship as your partner will realize how much you know and understand them.

Will the spirit of Christmas be affected by the tax hike and the upcoming Olympics

Leather products and fashion items that match the season are expected to be popular gift items for men. However, with
the consumption tax hike, everyone might be in their economy mode. For this year’s Christmas, couples will be seen ordering delicatessen, sweets, or alcoholic drinks and enjoying the festivities at home. After all, spending time with your loved ones is what really matters the most.

Moreover, if you still want to give your partner something for Christmas, a trendy alternative would be sneakers. In recent years, the sneaker boom is not only limited to sports brands, but also luxury brands releasing new models every few months. With the upcoming Tokyo Olympics and Paralympics, the Japan Sports Agency encourages everyone to wear sneakers to work to boost awareness of physical activity.

Wearing sneakers with suits are becoming a new trend in the business scene as more major corporations are showing support of this movement. The sneakers we know have evolved from casual designs to elegant ones with so many variations. It wouldn’t hurt to give your loved one a new pair for their everyday use.

Although we used last year’s data for this article, this year’s responses are not expected to stray too far from the average figures listed above. You still have time before Christmas, so better decide on your budget, check out the latest trends, and casually take note of what your partner might want as a present!
