These Toys in Japan Will Most Likely Be Sold Out This Christmas Season

You can't go wrong with them!

Christmas is the season for gift-giving. For children, this is the time of the year when they get to receive the toys from their wishlist.

In this article, we introduce the latest toys and trends of this year so you can shop for the perfect gift for your kids this holiday season!

According to the data from the Japan Toy Association, the toy market in Japan in FY2018 was approximately 840 billion. About 40% of it comes from Christmas and New Year, the largest demand period for the toy industry.

Last September 4 and 5, the
Christmas Toy Fair 2019 was held in Japan. At this event, many manufacturers released their featured products for the Christmas sales season. The results for the Christmas Toys Elected by Toy Stores 2019, where retailers and wholesalers nationwide vote for the toys that are most likely to be sold out this year, as well as the toys they want to sell, have also been announced.

For the boys’ toys category, the first place was awarded to
Henshin Belt DX Hiden Zero One Driver (BANDAI). The second place was given to the 60th-anniversary limited edition Pla-Rail Rails! Vehicles! Scenes! Sixtieth Anniversary Best Selection Set (TOMY), while the third place went to Let's Play! DX Tomica Tower (TOMY).

Aside from this, let’s also take a look at this year’s toy trends, which are divided into three categories:

The first is
Surprise Toy, which has fun-to-open packages and surprise toys inside. Since it first landed in Japan in 2018, several toy manufacturers have been producing these kinds of products. Many of them come in cute and fancy designs including the L.O.L. Surprise! Makeover Series Hairgoals 2. In addition, there’s also the WHO are YOU? (SEGA TOYS), which transforms into a stuffed animal when soaked in water, and Poopsie Slime Surprise! (BANSAI), which produces different kinds of slime. Part of the reason why these toys are super popular is that they’re experience-based. Just the act of opening the toy is already exciting.

The second is
Sports Game. The excited feelings from the Rugby World Cup and the anticipation for the Tokyo Olympics has increased the interest of consumers towards sports-related toys. Besides the Jinsei Game, the Bouldering Race (EPOCH) and Yakyuban 3D Ace Super Control (EPOCH) have been introduced to the market.

The last category is the
Programming Toy, which can develop programmatic thinking and problem-solving skills in children while they have fun. A major manufacturer entered the market two to three years ago in preparation for programming education, which will be compulsory at elementary schools from FY2020. The Koroga Switch Doraemon DX Kit and Hajimete-no Programming! Dono Michi Toru? Anpanman Drive Car (SEGA TOYS) are seen as following this year’s trends of strengthening the lineup of educational toys.
