These Japanese Pottery Shops Will Make You Want to Eat Home More Often

One quick and easy way to elevate your dining experience is to invest in beautiful tableware. Japan, never short on pottery shops, is the perfect place to do that. If you ever find yourself in the Kyushu area, here are some of the stores you shouldn't miss: 


SELECT BEPPU



SELECT BEPPU
is a museum shop that sells beautiful Usukiyaki pieces, a series of stylish white porcelain pieces that were once abandoned in the later Edo period. Check out the Hakuji-rinka, a white porcelain flower petal-shaped plate, (¥6,480), Hakuji-rinka Kikuka-bachi, a white porcelain Chrysanthemum-shaped bowl (¥5,940), and Hakuji-rinka Kikuka-zara, a white porcelain Chrysanthemum-shaped dish (¥3,024).


These three are favorites among customers. 


Blue bowl (
¥4,968), Tumbler (¥3,024), and Ice Cup (¥3,888) are also popular. They are sold by wakako ceramics, which is managed by ceramist Wakako Sakamoto.

SELECT BEPPU is located at 9-34, Chuo-machi, Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. They're open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Tuesdays. If a national holiday falls on a Tuesday, then it is open on that day.

 
Utsuwaya Living & Tableware

Utsuwaya Living & Tableware is a grocer's shop that specializes in works created by ceramists in Kyushu. Here, you'll find thousands of plates and sundries in a 100-square-meter space.

Utsuwaya Living & Tableware is located at 1647-240, Kikudomi, Koshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. They're open daily from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. except Wednesdays.

 

224 shop+saryo


224 shop+saryo
is an original pottery shop managed by 224 porcelain, one of the brands under Hizen Yoshida-yaki. They make full use of traditional techniques while putting priority on function and design, so every piece is designed well. Most of the pieces in the collection are white, so they'll blend well with your existing pieces.


Mug and Tata Tea Set (¥2,430)


The tea set, created with the image of a bird in mind, expresses family and daily affection.


When you pour soy sauce onto the rice ball-shaped plate, it looks like an actual rice ball wrapped in nori. (yellow or white, ¥918) 


224 shop+saryo is located at 909-1, Shimojuku Otsu, Ureshino-machi, Ureshino City, Saga Prefecture. They're open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on weekdays except Wednesdays and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on weekends and national holidays.

The sun-shaped illustration of Sabato feels warm and colorful (¥3,024).


The area of Nishino-hara is a place that specializes in Hasami-yaki pottery. In the renovated shop, they have a variety of playful tableware.

Minami Soko is located at 2187-4, Isekigo, Hasami Town, Higashisonogi District, Nagasaki Prefecture. They're open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. except Wednesdays.

 

KIHARA ARITA main store

 

The KIHARA ARITA main store is directly managed by KIHARA, a brand that develops modern tableware using the traditional technology of Arita-yaki and Hasami-yaki. They have many collections that you'll want to use every day, such as the KOMON series, which has arranged traditional Japanese patterns and the SITAKU series, which is user-friendly.


KOMON series

The Mame Zara Namichidori or small plate with plover design (¥648), Tori Zara Asa No Ha or middle-sized plate with hemp leaves (¥864), and Ozara Kogiku or chrysanthemum big plate (¥3,024) are perfect for everyday.

The SITAKU series was made with the concept that plates can be used as instruments.

KIHARA ARITA main store is located at Arita Será 2351-169, Akasaka Hei, Arita Town, Nishimatsuura District, Saga Prefecture. They're open from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

The ARITA PORCELAIN LAB flagship store is a brand that pursues simple and modern designsin Arita, where the porcelain in Japan originated. Yazaemon Gama, founded in 1804, sells products in a way that suits the modern lifestyle.


Gosu (Left,¥2,700) and Syu (Right,¥2,700)  are stylish toothpick boxes. 


ARITA PORCELAIN LAB flagship store is located at 1-11-3, Kamikohira, Arita Town, Nishimatsuura District, Saga Prefecture. They're open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. except Tuesdays. The cafe is open from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m.
