All the Best Places to Visit in Hokkaido During Autumn Season

Add these to your itinerary for your fall trip.


The Autumn season in Japan doesn’t get nearly enough love as much as Spring, but you should consider taking a trip because it’s a beautiful season. The leaves turn a lovely shade of yellow, orange, and red, and the weather is just the right kind of chill—an escape from the otherwise hot tropical weather of the Philippines.


In this article, we’re sharing five spots in Hokkaido where you can see the most amazing Autumn views.


Daisetsuzan (Kurotake) Mountain
Kakikawa District, Hokkaido


The colored leaves in Daisetsuzan Mountain have complex colors with its mixtures of green from the coniferous trees and red and yellow from the broad-leaved trees that make the mountain look like a piece of art. The leaves from the top of the mountain to the bottom, where there the ropeway station is, starts to color from the beginning of September. Rowan, Macrodiervilla middendorffiana, and minne maple start to look great between the middle and the end of September.


Daisetsuzan (Kurotake) Mountain is located in the Kakikawa District, Hokkaido. The leaves start to change color at the beginning of September. It’s best to visit any time from the middle of September to the middle of October. The ropeway round trip ticket is ¥2,400 for junior high school students and older, ¥1,200 for elementary school students. Lift round trip ticket is ¥800 for junior high school students and older, ¥400 for elementary school students. Ropeway and lift round trip ticket is ¥3,000 or ¥1,500. It’s about 30 minutes by bus from JR Kamikawa Station to Sounkyo Onsen. Seven minutes by the ropeway to the 5
th station of Kurotake, 15 minutes by the lift from the 5th to 7th station, and about 90 minutes on foot from the 7th station to the top.



Akadake (Ginsendai)


Ginsendai, which is located at the point 1,500 meters high by the Akadake hiking exit, is named since it is thought of as the source of the Ginga Waterfall and is known as a great place to see the colored leaves by hikers.


Akadake (Ginsendai) is in the Kamikawa District, Hokkaido. The leaves begin to change color at the beginning of September. It’s best to visit the area in September. Admission is free. It takes about 30 minutes by Dohoku Bus from JR Kamikawa Station to Sounkyo. Another 60 minutes by bus from Sounkyo to Ginsendai (Two buses a day).



Ginga Ryusei Waterfall
Kamikawa District, Hokkaido


“Ginga Waterfall” is called a male waterfall with a big amount of water falling dynamically and “Ryusei Waterfall” falls like a white thread divide. They are both chosen as the “100 best waterfalls” in Japan and are spots where you can enjoy the harmony with the colorful autumn leaves. Water falling on the sides of the cliff and Fudoiwa are spectacular. Leaves usually start to color in the end of September and maples, rowans, and katsura look best from the beginning of October.

Ginga Ryusei Waterfall is located in the Kamikawa District, Hokkaido. Leaves start to change colors at the end of September, It’s best to visit in October. Admission is free. It takes about 30 minutes by Dohoku Bus from JR Kamikawa Station to Sounkyo. Another 30 minutes from Sounkyo on foot.



Maruyama Park
Sapporo City, Hokkaido


Maruyama Park is in the center of Sapporo. It used to be an experiment spot that was established in the Meiji period. Cedar and katsura trees and leaves from that time still grow thick. Inside the spacious park, there is also a Maruyama native forest designated as a national natural treasure. You can also see squirrels and small birds. There is a path where you can hike enjoying the colored leaves of katsura, asada, and yamamomiji. Usually, the best time to visit is from the middle to the end of October.


Maruyama Park is located in Sapporo City, Hokkaido. The leaves’ colors change at the beginning of October. It’s best to visit any time from the middle to the end of October. We recommend visiting around the playground equipment, along Maruyama River. Admission is free. It is a 5-minute-walk from the Subway Maruyama Park Station.



Youtei Panorama Terrace
Abuta District, Hokkaido


Here you can get a panoramic view of Youtei Mountian, Toya Lake, Orofure Toge, and the resort areas. You can see the astonishing mountains and colored leaves in Hokkaido. Light meals and drinks are available at the cable car shop next to this terrace. Enjoy a relaxing and luxurious time here at this terrace. It’s open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. until 14 October.


Youtei Panorama Terrace is located in the Abuta District, Hokkaido. The colors of the leaves change at the beginning of October. The best time to visit is at the beginning to the middle of October. We recommend you visit the Youtei Panorama Terrace. An entrance pass for Rusutsu Resort is required which is ¥5,000 for junior high school students and older, ¥4,200 for students, ¥4,000 for elementary school students, ¥1,200 yen for 4-year-olds and younger than elementary school students and those over 60 years old (ID required). There are also family discounts and twilight pass available from the afternoon and all-you-can-eat entrance passes. There is a free bus “Rusutsu” from near JR Sapporo Station (Kamori Building 3) (Make sure to reserve) and a bus “Big Rans” from Shinchitose Airport for those staying at the resort (Make sure to reserve).
