The Best Places to View the Autumn Leaves in Kanto Region

Walk through a bridge riddled with red and yellow foliage.


Kanto is one of those regions in Japan that offer spectacular autumnal views. As early as the end of September, you can already see some of the trees at popular sightseeing spots turning into a brilliant red hue. Are you planning to fly to Japan this fall?

Nasu Kogen


The
Nasu Kogen can be found under the Nasu Mountains, with Nasudake at its center. The autumn leaves are especially beautiful at Chausudake and Asahidake, which both bear trees such as maples, rowans, and doudan tsutsuji. Even the scenery at the ropeway located near the top of Chausudake is a view worthy of hundreds of photos. Colorful rowans can also be seen from the Kendo 17 Nasu Kogen Highway, which is most likely why it’s a popular driving route. 



Nasu Kogen is located at Nasu District, Tochigi. The leaves in this area start changing color by the end of September. The best time to visit this place is from the beginning until the middle of October. We recommend visiting the Chausudake, Asahidake, and Nasu Ropeway. Nasu Kogen is about 60 minutes by bus from the JR Kuroiso Station to Nasu Ropeway Sanroku Station.


Hananuki Gorge


The
Hananuki Gorge has large and small streams and waterfalls. Brightly-colored maple trees populate the areas around the Kotakigawa Camp and Shiomi Waterfall Suspension Bridge. If you cross the 60-meter long suspension bridge, you’ll be able to see the Shiomi Waterfall right under. There is also a hiking course that lets you enjoy a view of the gorge and autumn foliage while strolling the area. In addition to this, the place will be holding the Hananuki Gorge Autumn Leaves Festival from November 1 to December 1. You can expect to find food stands and illuminations at this event. Hananuki Gorge is located in Takahagi City, Ibaraki. The leaves in this area start changing color at the beginning of November. The best time to visit this place is from the middle until the end of November. We recommend visiting the areas around Shiomi Waterfall Suspension Bridge. Hananuki Gorge is about 25 minutes by taxi from JR Takahagi Station.


Ozegahara


Ozegahara
is a wetland located about 1,400 meters above the ground and surrounded by 2,000-meter-high mountains. It is one of the highest wetlands in Japan surrounded by native forests consisting of about 800 species of rare plants. The autumn colors in this area are called “kusa Momiji” (grass-colored leaves) and the grasslands start changing into a golden hue from the middle of September to the beginning of October. The broad-leaved trees, on the other hand, start turning red and yellow from the end of September until the middle of October. Together, these trees make a beautiful contrast to the green coniferous trees.

Ozegahara is listed as one of the special treasures and special protection areas in Japan. We recommend you check out the Shibutsu Mountain, Hiuchigatake, and other wetland areas there. 



Ozegahara is located at
Tone District, Gunma. The grass in this area starts changing color at the beginning of September, while the broad-leaved trees change color at the end of September. The best time to visit this place is from the end of September until the beginning of October. Ozegahara is about 80 minutes by Kanetsu Kotsu Bus for Oshimizu or Tokura from JR Numata Station. You may also change buses at Tokura Station and take the microbus going to Hatomachi Toge for 30 minutes and walk for 60 minutes to Yamanohana.


Tanigawadake


Tanigawadake
, which is about 1,977 meters high, is listed among the 100 best mountains in Japan. You’ll get a magnificent view at the top of the mountain, as well as, the hiking trail in the middle. When the rowans near the top change red at the beginning of October, other trees in the area begin to change colors too.


Ichinokurasawa, the eastern foot of the mountain, is one of the three biggest rock walls in Japan and is a symbolic spot of Minakami. You can enjoy the autumn foliage from the ropeway that leads to the top of the mountain. When you come down, you can also admire the red mountain and blue sky together. You’ll need to register if you want to hike at this mountain. 



Tanigawadake is located at Tone District, Gunma. The leaves in this area start changing color at the beginning of October. The best time to visit this place is from the middle until the end of October. We recommend visiting Ichinokurasawa. You’ll have to pay a ¥500 fee for a guide if you’re going to use the electric bus to Ichinokurasawa (The bus fare is free). Ichinokurasawa is about 25 minutes by bus from JR Minakami Station for Tanigawadake Ropeway or 45 minutes by bus from JR Kaminoge Kogen Station.


Ikaho Onsen


Ikaho Onsen is a famous hot spring in the Kanto Region. Around the Kajika Bridge, maple, sawtooth oak, and urushi trees all start changing color around October 20 each year. The autumn leaves are best viewed at the beginning of November. In addition to this, illuminations will be held from October 22 to November 17 from 4:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. here, so don’t miss the chance to enjoy the fantastic scenery! When lit up, the leaves look as if they are burning. Make sure to take plenty of photos at this stunning spot at the onsen facility.

Ikaho Onsen is located at Shibukawa City, Gunma. The leaves in this area start changing color in the middle of October. The best time to visit this place is from the end of October until the beginning of November. We recommend visiting the Kajika Bridge, Kaminoyama Park, and Ikaho Shinrin Park. Ikaho Onsen is about 25 minutes by bus from JR Shibukawa Station.
