Don’t Miss These Enchanting Autumn Sightseeing Spots in Tokai

The Tokai region of Japan also has its fair share of beautiful sightseeing spots during the autumn season. Already planning your trip to Japan? In this article, we list down the best places to be this November.


Sumatakyo


At Sumata River canyon, a tributary of the Oi River, you can enjoy the amazing scenery of red and yellow 
leaves this autumn season. The Dream Suspension Bridge and Hiryu Bridge, where the Shinrin Railway used to run, also offer spectacular views. If you take the pathway from the onsen town, it will take you about 90 minutes to arrive at the two bridges. The Dream Suspension Bridge, which is located eight meters above the river and spans 90 meters long, lets you admire the surrounding colorful sakura, maple, and keyaki trees. The colored leaves look even more beautiful against the emerald green river surface. In addition to this, the place will be holding the Sumatakyo Washi no Akari event from October 15 to October 29 this year. Sumatakyo is located at Haibara District, Shizuoka. The leaves in the area start changing color at the beginning of November. The best time to visit this place is from the beginning until the end of November. We recommend visiting the Dream Suspension Bridge. Sumatakyo is about about 40 minutes by bus from Oigawa Railway Oigawa Line Senzu Station.


Atami Plum Garden


The
Atami Plum Garden is famous for its early blooming plums and its autumn leaves. You can find about 380 maple trees in the area including the Iroha maple, Musashino, and Ichijo species. These color the garden each year, from the end of November to December, due to the warm climate. If you time your visit right, you might also be able to see the plums that bloom in the middle of November. The area in the middle of the garden is the best spot to admire the autumn foliage. Many people visit the garden during the Atami Plum Garden Momiji Festival when the leaves are lit up. This year, it will be held from November 16 to December 8. Atami Plum Garden is located at Atami City, Shizuoka. The leaves in the area start changing color in the middle of November. The best time to visit this place is from the end of November until the beginning of December. Atami Plum Garden is a 7-minute walk from JR Kinomiya Station or 15 minutes by bus to Plum Garden Ai no Hara Danchi from JR Atami Station. Make sure to get off at Plum Garden.

Iwayado Park


At
Iwayado Park, you can enjoy strolling around and admiring the autumn leaves from the bridge above the Torihara River. We recommend you also check out the natural rock shrines like Iwayado, Gyomyo Waterfall, and Seto Big Falls. You’ll be able to experience the dynamic and beautiful rocks and waterfalls, made by nature, through your five senses. The place is also holding the Iwayado Momiji Festival from November 1 to November 30 this year. Iwayado Park is located at Seto City, Aichi. The leaves in the area start changing color at the beginning of November. The best time to visit this place is in the middle of November. We recommend visiting the Torihara River, which flows through the park. Iwayado Park is 20 minutes by taxi from Nagoya Railway Owari Seto Station. You may also take the Meitetsu bus from the station to Shinano Honcho and walk for 25 minutes.


Shuzenji Nature Park


The
Shuzenji Nature Park is about 10,000 square meters big and has about 1,000 trees in its forest. They are mostly composed of Iroha maple, Tou maple, and Oomomiji trees. From the middle of November until the beginning of December, you’ll be able to witness the leaves changing from red to yellow color. On sunny days, you can also enjoy the contrast between the brightly-colored maples and the blue Mt. Fuji. Aside from this, the Momiji Festival will also be held from the middle of November until the beginning of December.



Shuzenji Nature Park is located at Izu City, Shizuoka. The leaves in the area start changing color in the middle of November. The best time to visit this place is from the middle of November until the beginning of December. We recommend visiting the Momoji Forest. Shuzenji Nature Park is about 18 minutes by bus going to Niji no Sato from Izu Hakone Railway Shuzenji Station. Make sure to get off at Momiji Bayashi Mae. 


Ise Jingu Naiku Shrine


The Koutai Shingu of Ise Jingu is also called “Naiku.” Amaterasu, the great ancestor of the imperial family and the Japanese, is said to reside in this shrine.
Ise Jingu Naiku is located on top of the Isuzu River, where the Kamiji River and Shimaji River meet. Each year, the best time to admire the autumn leaves in the area is from the end of November until the beginning of December. The trees reflecting off of the Isuzu River is a sight to see. The bright red color of the leaves can also be admired from the handwashing space of the shrine. This spot symbolizes purity and makes the autumn scenery more refreshing and spiritual. You can pray at this shrine from 5 a.m. to 5 p.m. from October to December.

Ise Jingu Naiku Shinen is located in Ise City, Mie. The leaves in the area start changing color at the end of November. The best time to visit this place is from the end of November until the beginning of December. We recommend visiting the Kazebiinorimiya Bridge and Isuzu River Mitarashiba. To get to Ise Jingu Naiku Shinen, take the bus from JR/ Kinki Japan Railway Ise-shi Station for 20 minutes. Get off at Naikumae and walk for about 5 minutes. Or, you may also take the bus for about 15 minutes from Kinki Japan Railway Uji Yamada Station, then get off at Naikumae and walk for 5 minutes.
