Join This Santa Claus Run Happening in Japan This December
This is an event for a cause.
The Tokyo Great Santa Run 2019 Run & Fun Walk will be held on December 22 at the Komazawa Olympic Park. This is a charity event where up to 5,000 people can have fun while running and walking in their Santa Claus costumes. Their entrance fees will be used to give Christmas gifts to children who are currently fighting different illnesses. Applications for participants are currently open on their official website and other platforms.
Many people in Santa Claus costumes join in on the run.
This Santa Run event is a winter activity that has been carried out around the world including the UK. The event started in Japan back in 2009 in Osaka. The event was held for the first time in Tokyo at Meiji Jingu Gaien last December with approximately 2,500 participants.
The theme for this year will be Run & Fun Walk. It will have two courses for running (about 4.3km) and walking (about 2km) available for participants dressed in their best Santa Claus costumes. Participants with strollers and pets like dogs can also join. After the Run & Fun Walk, there will also be an after-party prepared with exciting stage performances, booth events, and food corners.
Since the Santa costume rental is already included in the ticket fee, you can easily participate even if you don’t have one. Of course you can also wear unique Christmas themed costumes such as your own Santa costume, reindeer, or fir tree. However, the ticket costs are the same whether or not you bring your own costume: Adult Santa (¥3,300), Student Santa (¥2,200), and Junior Santa (for 3 year olds to Junior high school students (¥1,100). (*Junior Santas are only provided with a Santa hat).
Five thousand Santa Clauses gathered for presents for children.
About 50 junior and senior high school students led by Juntendo University School of Medicine planned and managed the event with the concept of making it a dream charity where children can snuggle up with other children in mind. Like the previous year, they will provide gifts and medical support for children in Japan and overseas.
In the previous year, they sent gifts to about 1,000 children who were in five different hospitals including Keio University Hospital Pediatrics. They also delivered a sticking plaster with messages to children in Kenya and prepared medical support for Masai. This year they plan to expand their scale by recruiting up to 5,000 Santa Clauses for more support.
The official website and other platforms are currently accepting participants and volunteers for the event. The deadline is on December 20, 2019 at 6 PM. This is on a first-come-first-served basis so if you are interested, please check with your family and friends as soon as possible.
