Various events will be held in the Tokyo area to close the year that was and to welcome the brand new year ahead. If you’re in town for the holidays, there are many events where you can have fun with both family and friends like the New Year’s sale at Tokyo Solamachi and COUNTDOWN JAPAN at Makuhari Messe. We’ve put together all the details you need to know about these events in case you want to catch them.
New Year’s event and sale at Tokyo Sky Tree Town®
January 1 to 3 2020
You can watch Japanese calligraphy under the highest tower in the world! (photo from last year)
You can enjoy many events to welcome the new year at Tokyo Sky Tree Town. Don’t miss the Japanese calligraphy performance right under Tokyo Sky Tree®, the highest tower in the world. There will also be New Year’s sales, alcohol provided by sumo wrestlers, and shishimai performances, too. If that doesn’t excite you, the TOKYO SKY TREE TOWN® ICE SKATING PARK will be open from 4 January to the beginning of March too, so enjoy ice skating under Sky Tree (¥1,600 per adult). Sounds like so much holiday fun, right?
The New Year’s event and sale at Tokyo Sky Tree Town® will be held from 1 to 3 January 2020 in Tokyo Sky Tree Town at 1-1-2 Oshiage, Sumida District, Tokyo. Hours depend on event you will be attending. Admission is free except for events held by observatory which will require additional fees.
COUNTDOWN JAPAN 19/20
December 28 to 31
Famous artists like Official HigeDandism, a group that will also perform at Kohaku for the first time this year, will perform at COUNTDOWN JAPAN.
Famous artists like those who will also perform for the Kohaku will be performing for this 4-day live festival perfect for celebrating the end of the year. You can enjoy various genres of music such as rock, pop, and hip hop. There will be a live countdown on New Year’s Eve and the moment the new year begins becomes especially exciting. Why not celebrate the new year with your favorite artist?
COUNTDOWN JAPAN 19/20 will be held from December 28 to 31 in Makuhari Messe at 2-1 Nakase, Mihama District, Chiba City, Chiba. They will be open from 12 pm to 8:40 pm and from 3 pm on 31 December to 5 am on 1 January. Admission fees are as follows ¥38,500 for all 4 days; 1 day tickets are ¥12,000 on December 28, ¥12,500 for December 29 and 30, and ¥13,000 for December 31. Tickets have been on sale since November 30.
Tokyo Joypolis Countdown Party 2020
You can play until the morning with comedy shows and events!
This countdown event held every year will be running all night until 5 the next morning. Various comedians will perform taking part in the countdown and celebrating the new year with events where you might get luxurious presents!
Tokyo Joypolis Countdown Party 2020 will be held on December 31 in Tokyo JoyPolis at Decks Tokyo Beach 3~5F, 1-6-1 Daiba, Minato District, Tokyo. They are open from 10 a.m. to 5 a.m. Admission fee is still to be determined.
Sunshine 60 Observatory SPECIAL COUNTDOWN FES〜GO！2020〜
It’s an entertaining countdown event where you can also experience VR.
You can welcome the new year here at an observatory with a panoramic view of the city in the evening. Besides live and comedy performances, there are 5 thrilling and refreshing VR amusements like “TOKYO Dangan Flight” where you get on a human-cannon shaped machine and explore the future Tokyo and a swing-coaster called, well, “Swing Coaster.”
The Sunshine 60 Observatory SPECIAL COUNTDOWN FES〜GO！2020〜 will be held on December 31 in the SKY CIRCUS Sunshine 60 Observatory at 3-1 Higashi Ikebukuro, Toshima District, Tokyo from 8 p.m. to 1 a.m. Admission fee is ¥3,000 if purchased in advance, ¥3,200 yen if purchased on the day of the event.
New Year’s at Sunshine Aquarium
December 28 to January 19
Heterocephalus glaber will be shown!
Since 2020 is the year of the mouse, heterocephalus glaber will be specially shown at the Sunshine Aquarium. Make sure to check out this lucky animal that lives for about 30 years. “Otter Greeting Time New Year’s version” will also be held from January 1 to 5.
New Year’s at Sunshine Aquarium will be held from December 28 to January 19 in the Sunshine Aquarium at 3-1 Higashi Ikebukuro, Toshima District, Tokyo from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. (Last entrance is at 5 p.m.). Admission fee is ¥2,200 for adults, ¥1,200 for elementary and junior high school students, and ¥700 for 4 year-olds and above (free admission for 3 years-old and below).
Yomiuri Land Rice Cake making festival & Rice cake eating

Have fun making rice cakes with Good and Lucky!
To celebrate the new year, why not make rice cakes with Good and Lucky, Yomiuri Land’s characters? Have fun making rice cakes and creating good memories for the new year! Only 300 people will be able to enjoy the made rice cakes, so make sure to check it out.
See how brave you are with this “Coming of Age Bungee Jump”
In addition, “Coming of Age Bungee Jump” will be open from January 11 to 13. Those becoming 20 in 2020 will be able to enter Yomiuri Land for free and also try this bungee jump once with no fee. How about making a thrilling jump to commemorate your coming of age? You will surely feel refreshed after jumping. Try it!
Yomiuri Land Rice Cake making festival & Rice cake eating will be held from December 28 to January 19 in Yomiuri Land at 4015-1 Yanokuchi, Inagi City, Tokyo from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. and from 9:30 a.m. on Sundays and national holidays. Undecided about 1 January (numbered tickets will be distributed for the rice cakes). Admission fee is ¥1,800 for adults, ¥1,500 for junior high and high school students, ¥1,000 for 3-year-olds and above and elderlies. Admission is free for new adults (those who just turned 20).
Happy Island Countdown 2020
Colorful fireworks light up the night sky of Hakkeijima.
This is a popular countdown event at Hakkeijima Sea Paradise and will be open all night. Besides special shows by sea animals, you can play on the coasters all night. For the new year, about 3,000 spectacular fireworks will light up the sky. There will also be entertaining performances with search lights, so don’t miss it!
Happy Island Countdown 2020 will be held on December 31 at Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise in Hakkeijima, Kanazawa District, Yokohama City, Kanagawa from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. A countdown all night pass will be on sale (fee undecided).
Otaria’s New Year’s Japanese Calligraphy
January 1 to 13
An Otaria will write the kanji of the animal of the year!
At the “Fureai Lagoon,” an otaria (a kind of sea lion) that is great at Japanese calligraphy will hold a brush in its mouth and write the kanji “mouse,” which is the animal of 2020. Don’t miss the big sea lion write a letter slowly and skillfully. You can also take pictures with the otaria after the event.
Otaria’s New Year’s Japanese Calligraphy will be held from January 1 to 13 at the Yokohama Hakkeijima Sea Paradise in Hakkeijima, Kanazawa District, Yokohama City, Kanagawa 1 to 2 times a day (time still undecided). Aqua Resorts Pass costs ¥3,000 for adults.
“Oji Kitsune no Gyoretsu”
This event is held every year on New Year’s Eve.
This is one of the most famous events on New Year’s Eve in Oji. People with fox masks and fox-like makeup will walk from Shozoku Inari Shrine to Oji Inari Shrine. After the walk, kitsune hayashi and shishimai performances will be held at the Oji Inari Shrine.
“Oji Kitsune no Gyoretsu” will be held on December 31 in Shozoku Inari Shrine to Oji Inari Shrine at 2-30-13 Oji, Kita District, Tokyo (Shozoku Inari Shrine) from 9 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. The Great Line is from 12:00 a.m. to 12:45 a.m. Admission is free.
