For animal lovers who cannot keep pets of their own, an animal cafe is a magical place. It fulfills the wishes of those who like animals and want to interact with them but cannot keep them at home. Recently, while various animal cafes such as Owl Cafe and Mameshiba (Little Brushwood Dog) Cafe are gaining in popularity, a new type of animal cafe has been introduced. Kapineko Cafe in Kichijoji, Tokyo, is the only animal cafe in Japan where you can touch cats and a capybara.

Kapineko Cafe

The cafe is the only place in Japan where you can pet a capybara and cats at the same time. It is located right next to Kichijoji Station and is a healing spot that can be easily visited. The fare for 60 minutes with a drink and a capybara snack is ¥2,200 for adults and ¥1,100 from six-year-old children to elementary school students. If you want to extend the time, 30 minutes is half the original price. There are seven types of drinks to choose from such as cafe au lait, seasonal flavors, and additional orders of drinks are also available.

Capybaras are the world's largest rodents and love to be petted by humans, so they are able to interact with humans safely and be friendly with cats. The capybara boy Tawashi, the cafe’s mascot, is delicate and affectionate. It is his daily routine to take a nap with the cat. You can experience owning a capybara at home by taking a picture on the couch together or giving Tawashi a snack he loves. His friends are cute cats including a friendly "deputy manager" tomcat Dan, along with other cats that have an excellent physique.

The cafe also seeks foster parents for protected cats. In cooperation with the local community, the cafe will welcome the protected cat and create an environment where visitors can communicate with the cat. Then, the customer can be a foster parent after they actually interact with the cat and check their compatibility. Of course, just playing with the cat in the cafe is also more than welcome.
