Staying at These Quirky Hotels in Osaka Is An Experience in Itself
One of them is run by robots!
Osaka is a famous travel destination in Japan, known for its jiggly cheesecake, street food, and more recently, for having the largest MUJI branch in the world. While there is no shortage of affordable accommodation here, there has also been a boom in concept hotels featuring innovations that are not usually found in the usual accommodation facilities. The next time you're in Osaka, try staying at some of these popular, state-of-the-art lodgings. You might find the experience an adventure on its own.
BOOK AND BED TOKYO - Shinsaibashi Branch
The beds are located behind the huge bookcase in this unique structure.
BOOK AND BED TOKYO - Shinsaibashi Branch opened last December 13, 2018. There, you'll find about 2,000 books of different genres specially selected by the SHIBUYA PUBLISHING & BOOKSELLERS lining the walls. The hostel aims to be an "accommodation bookshop" where bookworms can enjoy their favorite pastime as they fall asleep.
"There are no comfortable mattresses, fluffy pillows, nor warm comforters. The perfect setting for a good night's sleep is not something that will be found here. However, this place offers a new experience of reading, where book lovers can find the book that suits them best, then read until they fall asleep. Overnight stays with friends or families are very much welcome here. Those who live in the outskirts should also give this hostel a try," Director Rikimaru says.
BOOK AND BED TOKYO has expanded to six branches, including Osaka, Tokyo, Kyoto, and Fukuoka. It has also been featured in CNN, thus, gaining worldwide attention.
BOOK AND BED TOKYO is located on the third floor of Unagidani Square Bldg., 1-19-11 Higashi Shinsaibashi, Chuo District, Osaka and is only a 1-minute walk away from Shinsaibashi Subway Station.
Henn-na Hotel Osaka Shinsaibashi
At this hotel, multi-lingual dinosaur robots handle the check in and check out process. Payments are made via the automatic payment machine.
In the same area, you'll find Henn-na Hotel Osaka Shinsaibashi. Aside from its name, part of what makes this hotel interesting is that it holds the Guinness World Record for being the first-ever hotel in the world to have robots as staff members.
"By having entertaining dinosaur robots stationed at the front desk, guests will definitely have a fun and pleasant experience the moment they step in the hotel. We aim to increase the efficiency of robots in areas where they perform their jobs best," says the manager, Mr. Shinobu Tayashiki.
With foreigners giving good feedback to the kind of services that the robot-staffed hotel offers, the company has decided to open the Nishi Shinsaibashi Branch this March 14. They are also planning to open more branches across the country, in addition to the seven hotels that they already have in the Kanto region.
Henn-na Hotel Osaka Shinsaibashi is located in 3-5-2 Minamisenba, Chuo District, Osaka and is only a 3-minute walk from the Shinsaibashi Subway Station.
SEKAI HOTEL FUSE
Since Higashi Osaka is known as Kansai's town of craftsmanship, many small-scale factories served as inspiration for this hotel.
Inspired by the main goal of converting an ordinary small town into a huge hotel, SEKAI HOTEL FUSE builds unique establishments from old buildings. One of them, the former Kiyoshima Boutique, now holds the front desk area of the hotel as well as a cafe that serves both guests and non-guests.
"We renovated abandoned buildings and turned them into guest rooms. We coordinated closely with owners of public facilities such as large public baths, restaurants, and activity areas for tourists to be able to go around the area conveniently," Operations Officer Kouta Kobayashi explains.
What sets SEKAI HOTEL apart from the rest is that it addresses the social problems of the town little by little. This type of concept may be appealing and may even be refreshing for those who are used to traveling in cities and other tourist spots. Through this project, guests are exposed to an entirely different cultural experience.
"We would like our guests to enjoy the famous tourist attractions, while also experiencing the ordinary life of people living in the downtown area," Mr. Kobayashi says.
SEKAI HOTEL FUSE is located in 1-19-1 Ajiro, Higashi Osaka, Osaka and is only a 5-minute walk from the Fuse Subway Station.
