This Town in Japan Is Known for Its Waterfalls and 100-Meter-High Bridge

Japan’s Takachiho area in the Miyazaki Prefecture definitely has its charms. There, you’ll find many beautiful tourist spots, including the Ama-no-Iwato and Takachiho Shrines.
During weekends and national holidays, you can tour around the town effortlessly by riding the Takachiho Excursion Bus, which travels for 25 minutes from the Takachiho Gorge to Ama-no-Iwato Shrine four times a day. Fares may range from ¥100 to ¥500, depending on the section. You can also avail their one-day free pass for ¥600.

Takachiho Amaterasu Railway
The Grand Super Cart is an attraction that lets you enjoy a spectacular view from 105 meters above the ground. It used to be known as the “greatest in the East.”
A maximum of 30 passengers can ride the cart headed to Takachiho Bridge. Several features during the 30-minute trip can make the travel more enjoyable for the passengers. One of them is the cart’s see-through floor; the other is the illumination show whenever the cart passes through a tunnel.
The Grand Super Cart stops in the middle of Takachiho Bridge.
Both carts,“Susanoo Gou” and “Amaterasu Gou,” are named after Shinto gods.
On the way to the bridge, the cart will pass through two tunnels with colorful illumination.
Takachiho Amaterasu Railway is located at 1425-1, Mitai, Takachiho, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture. It is open from 9:40 a.m. to 3:40 p.m. daily except on the third Thursday of the month and during rainy days. The admission fee costs ¥100, while the ride fare for the Grand Super Cart to Takachiho Bridge is worth ¥1,300.
Cafe terrace TAKACHIHOYA
At Cafe terrace TAKACHIHOYA, a pair of stone-carved guardian dogs welcome you at the entrance. But it’s their food that will keep you coming back. Try their vegan curry or gapao rice as well as the light lunches that cost only ¥580. Aside from this, the shop offers a variety of drinks that you can also order for takeout.
The TAKACHIHO YA Tea Macchiato (¥580 for L size) is a beverage that’s topped with a single Japanese egg cracker.

Cafe terrace TAKACHIHOYA is located at 1171-4, Mitai, Takachiho, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. daily.
Cafe Neko-no-Shippo was transformed from an old 60-year-old Japanese-style house to a comfortable private space for all of its customers.
The cafe is known for its doria, cakes, and herbal teas. We recommend you get a sip of their homemade herb tea samples, which start at ¥324. Pot service in the shop is also available for ¥400.
Baked Cheese Cake (¥350). For an additional ¥250, you can enjoy it with a drink.
There are many cat-themed decorations around the store. They are also available for purchase.
Cafe Neko-no-Shippo is located at 1227, Mitai, Takachiho, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture. It is open from 11:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily except on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.
Takachiho Gorge is a gorge with beautiful pillar-like cliffs made from the cooled lava that erupted from Mt. Aso. You can approach the 17-meter-high Manai Waterfall through a rental boat and bathe in the negative ions, which the falls are believed to possess.
There are heart plates bearing love requests hung around the promenade.
Manai Waterfall, whose waters flow down the gorge, is a popular photo spot.
Takachiho Gorge is located at Oshioi, Mitai, Takachiho, Nishiusuki District, Miyazaki Prefecture. It is open daily and has no holidays. Boat rental for 30 minutes costs ¥2,000.
