With climate change posing an even graver threat to our natural surroundings, taking care of our seas is now more important than ever. In Japan, hotels like
ANA InterContinental Manza Beach Resort in Okinawa are leading the way. Since 2003, the hotel has been involved in the campaign “Team Chura Sango” (chura means “beautiful” in the Okinawa dialect and sango means “coral” in Japanese). For many years, they have been cleaning the waters, getting rid of crown-of-thorns starfish, and planting nursery plants to protect the coral reefs. Guests can also contribute to the cause by participating in the hotel’s “Plan to Protect the Coral Reefs” campaign.

“Plan to Protect the Coral Reefs”

The “Plan to Protect the Coral Reefs” program allows guests to learn about the current state of the coral reefs in Okinawa and the importance of protecting the coral farm in the Onnason fishing port. They are also taught how to make a nursing plant that will help preserve the corals in the water.

Be one with nature.

At the end of the program, guests go on a tour to observe the cultivated coral reefs in the ocean. They can choose from three different kinds of tours: a tour on Submarine Jr. II (Underwater Observatory Ship), snorkeling, or diving.
