This Terrace in Japan Offers a Majestic View of the Clouds

If you want to go on a leisurely drive this summer, the Nagano Prefecture in Japan is the best place to do this. Here, you can take in the mystical cloud views, as well as, ride the Ryuoo Ropeway to the Sky Terrace on top of the Ryuoo Mountain.

Make sure to include these spots in your itinerary!

Ryuoo Ropeway

Enjoy a breathtaking view of the clouds from the terrace in the sky.

It takes approximately eight minutes to travel from the Sanroku Station to the Sancho Station on the Ryuoo Ropeway. The summit of the mountain is located 1,770 meters above sea level. On the way to the SORA Terrace,  you can admire the impressive landscape of the clouds from the windows of your cart.

The appearance ratio of the sea of clouds is at 64 percent. They are more likely to be visible when the temperature drops in the morning, afternoon, or after rainfall.

On weekends of the summer season, the Ryuoo Ropeway also holds a Starry Night Cruise where visitors can enjoy a view of the stars against the night sky. This event runs on selected days of July to October.

A starry sky awaits you at the top of Ryuoo Mountain!

Ryuoo Ropeway is located at 11700 Yomase, Yamanouchi-machi, Shimotakai District, Nagano Prefecture and is open from 9 a.m. to 6:40 p.m., with the final descent at 7 p.m. It runs from May 25 to November 4, 2019, and is closed from September 2 to 6. You may contact them at +81-269-33-7131. The fee is ¥2,500 for a round-trip ticket for adults.

SORA Terrace Café

The SORA Terrace Café stands on a steep slope on the peak of Ryuoo Mountain. From this spot, you can see the Northern Alps, and even as far as Sado Island, when the weather is clear. You can also relish the view of the clouds here, depending on the weather.

The cafe’s Colorful Sky Soda (¥500 each) was inspired by the image of sunsets and sunrises.

The Unkai Paitsutsumi Soup (Sea of Clouds Pie Soup, ¥850) is made with the local specialty nemagaridake, a type of bamboo.

SORA Terrace Café is located at 11700 Yomase, Yamanouchi-machi, Shimotakai-gun, Nagano Prefecture and is open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., but is closed if the ropeway is closed as well. You may contact them at +81-269-33-7131. Entrance is free of charge.

Ishiusuhiki Soba Kobo Yamanomi

The Ishiusuhiki Soba Kobo Yamanomi takes 11 minutes by ropeway and car from the SORA terrace. It is a restaurant that specializes in soba noodles, which they make daily with buckwheat flour from a contracted soba miller. The soba noodles, which are made from kiko (100% flour) and water from Kitashiga, have a great scent. We recommend you try it with simple rock salt. The restaurant’s soba pizza, which is baked in a hearth, is also very tasty.

Kiko-uchi Soba is sweet and has a berry-like scent. The Yamanomi (¥2,200) is a set consisting of Tebiki Sobagaki (hand-pulled soba noodles) and Soba Pizza.

Usuhiki Soba Kobo Yamanomi is located at 11700-315 Yomase, Yamanouchi-machi, Shimotakai-gun, Nagano Prefecture and is open from 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m daily except during the winter. You may contact them at +81-269-33-7577. Schedules may vary. For more information, visit their website here.
