10 Fireworks Displays in Hokkaido You Must Attend If You’re in Japan

Get ready for a light show!


Summertime in Japan
 means it’s matsuri or festival season. From fun float parades to fireworks displays, there’s simply so much to experience when the summer months hit. Below, we’ve compiled 10 fireworks festivals you need to check out if you’re in Hokkaido. Take note of the schedule and admission fees!


2019 Doshin UHB Fireworks Festival



This is a fireworks display that vividly colors Sapporo’s short summer, and creative elaborate fireworks adorn the night sky. The Wide Star Mine is a masterpiece that illuminates the lakeside for the finale. Approximately 4,000 fireworks including original creations will be launched.


The fireworks display will be along Toyohira River (between Horohirobashi and Minamioohashi), Chuo District, Sapporo City, Hokkaido on July 26, 7:40 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. It will proceed if there is slight rain. (If there is a storm on the day the event will be postponed to August 2, 2019 (Fri). If August 2 is also a stormy day the event will be canceled.) It is a 5-minute walk from Horohirabashi station or Nakanoshima Station on the Sapporo Municipal Subway Namboku Line. Traffic regulations around the venue will be set on that day. 38th Lake Toya Long Run Fireworks Display



The largest long-run fireworks display in Hokkaido. Every day during the period, 450 fireworks are launched, and they envelop the lake at night with colors. The fireworks launched from the lake and ship can be seen from the rooms and open-air baths of Lake Toya Onsen. There is a possibility of change to the above information due to the 2018 Hokkaido Eastern Iburi earthquake.


The fireworks display will be at the Lake Toya Onsen, Toyako-cho, Ashida-gun, Hokkaido from April 28, 2019 until October 31, 2019, 8:45 p.m. to 9:05 p.m. It will proceed as scheduled with slight rain but will be canceled if there are strong winds. TxT GARAGE PRESENTS 9th Makomanai Fireworks Festival



This is a large-scale fireworks festival held in Minami District, Sapporo City, Hokkaido. The fireworks are launched with a mixture of fireworks, music, lighting, and flames. This is the grandest fireworks display in Hokkaido with 22,000 rounds. It was confirmed in 2019 that the Marutama-ya, which has been active in musical fireworks events in various parts of the world, as well as the Konoya Aoki Fireworks who have won the Prime Minister’s Prize several times at national fireworks conferences would be performing this year. Enjoy the lasting effects and light art that can only be seen at the fireworks display in Makomanai. Most of the fireworks and light performances can only be seen in the stadium so we recommend to have paid seats there. You can also see light art drawn on the night sky.

Tokachi Mainichi Shimbun 100th anniversary commemorative 69th win every fireworks display



Top-class fireworks show held in Obihiro, Hokkaido. At the Tokachigawa riverbed, fireworks with highly entertaining features that combine music, lighting, and fireworks are unfolded. In 2019, a special program was held to commemorate the 100th anniversary of Tokachi Mainichi Newspaper.


The fireworks display will be held at Tokachi River Special Designated Site (400m downstream of Tokachi Oohashi Bridge) Obihiro City, Hokkaido on August 13, 2019, 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. If there is a storm on the day the event will be postponed to August 14, 2019. Hakodate Shimbun company Hakodate Port Fireworks Display



The power of starmines colors Hakodate Port. Using the terrain of Hokkaido’s Hakodate Port to create a stereoscopic effect, five Panoramic Starmine Fireworks are launched from the green island and the sea together with Digital Starmines from nine sites. The collaboration of color and creative fireworks and music echo throughout the audience.


The fireworks display was held at Hakodate City, Hokkaido/Midorinoshima last June 14, 2019.


“Sound and Light Fantasy” Fireworks in KAGURA 31



Decorate the night of Asahikawa with music. Fireworks in KAGURA, which will be held as a summer specialty of Asahikawa, Hokkaido, will be the 31st in 2019. A variety of about 3000 fireworks and new fireworks from 2019 will be launched in time with the music and will color the summer night sky. At the venue, there will be a small number of small fire shops from lunchtime, and various stalls will be open. From 5 p.m. local dance groups and flamenco stage events will also be held.


The fireworks display will be held at Asahikawa City, Hokkaido on August 14, 2019, 8:15 p.m. to 9 p.m. It is a 20-minute walk from JR Asahikawa Station, or a 20-minute drive from Hokkaido Expressway Asahikawa Takasu Interchange. There will be 500 free slots from 12 p.m. to 10 p.m. Asahikawa Taisetsu Arena, Asahikawa Taisetsu Crystal Hall also have temporary parking slots. The 66th Kitami Bonchi Festival Summer Fireworks Display

A summer fireworks display to decorate the finale of the 66th Kitami Bonchi Festival. In the summer of 2019, 4,000 fireworks are colorfully colored in the summer night sky. The program will create a summer night sky with a variety of fireworks including quick-fires such as Star Mine and No. 8 ball fireworks as well as creative fireworks.


The fireworks display will be held at Hokkaido Kitami City / Shunko-cho Koizumi River Site on July 21, 2019, 7:40 p.m. to 9 p.m. It is 10 minutes by taxi from JR Kitami Station. There will be a free temporary bus service from in front of Kitami Station south exit Central Promenade. There are traffic restrictions around the venue on the day from 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. There is free parking for 1,000 cars. Demon’s Fireworks



Starting from Noboribetsu East Interchange on the Hokkaido Expressway, there are demon monuments that stand here and there. The protectors of the hot springs are called Yuki-jin, and perform “Yakuharai no Mai” (literally dance of exorcism), praying for good health and happiness of people, and in this yearly event they carry handheld fireworks. With the Yuki-jin’s facial features all lined up, it is like a volcanic eruption that launches the fireworks at their full power.


The fireworks display will be held at Hell Valley Observatory Noboribetsu Onsen Noboribetsu City, Hokkaido from June 1, 2019 to July 26, 2019 every Thursday and Friday, from 8:30 p.m. (20-minutes duration). It opened last June 1, 2019. It is 10 minutes by car from the Noboribetsu Interchange on the Hokkaido Expressway. There is paid parking with 165 slots. Asahikawa Summer Festival "The 67th Way New Summer Cool Fireworks Display"



A fireworks display held on the first night of the "Asahikawa Summer Festival". Approximately 4,500 fireworks will be launched from the riverbank. The event is organized in three parts, Part 1 "Grand Show", Part 2 "Deluxe Show", and Part 3 "Grand Finale", with a variety of creative fireworks and star mines being the highlight.


The fireworks display will be held at Hokkaido Asahikawa-shi, Asahikawa City, Ishikari River Kawasu (between Asahibashi-Shinbashi) on August 1, 2019, from 7:45 p.m. For more information, you may contact the Hokkaido Shimbun Asahikawa Branch Business at +81-166-21-2555 (9:30 to 17:30 weekdays). Hakodate Opening Port 160th Anniversary Hakodate Port Festival Support

A fireworks display adorning the opening of the Hakodate Port Festival, which will be held from August 1 (Thursday) to 5 (Monday). The program is a five-part program that launches big star mines and underwater fireworks. You can see in all places facing the harbor, but we also recommend watching from Mt.
