Summer festivals in Japan are quite enjoyable. You’ve got a lightshow to marvel at with your family and friends. In most cases, admission is also free. So, what’s not to like? Below, we’ve put together a list of fireworks festivals happening in the Kyushu and Okinawa regions. Make sure to take note of the dates, so you can witness the magic if you’re in town.
32th Kanmon Strait Fireworks Festival
2019 welcomes the 32th anniversary of the Kanmon Strait Fireworks Festival. Moji in Kita-kyushu City of Fukuoka Prefecture and Shimonoseki City of Yamaguchi Prefecture sandwich this strait. From the Moji side, you can see continuous launches of large shells and musical fireworks. While from the Shimonoseki side, Shakugosun large shell and underwater fireworks can be seen. Fireworks are launched one after another from both sides. What a spectacle!
The 32th Kanmon Strait Fireworks Festival will be held in Moji-ku, Kita-Kyushu, Fukuoka Prefecture on August 13, 2019 (Tuesday) from 7:50 p.m. to 8:40 p.m. (Opening ceremony is at 7:40 p.m.) In case of stormy weather (wind speed of 10m/sec or more), the event will be cancelled. 19th Kagoshima Kinko Bay Summer Night Fireworks Festival for the 130th anniversary of Kagoshima City
This is the largest fireworks display in Kyushu with 15,000 fireworks in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture. The highlights are the special star main fireworks, which are dedicated to the new era name and the 130th anniversary of Kagoshima city organization. It also includes 2-shaykudama fireworks, 130 continuous launches of Kyushu's largest 1-shakudama fireworks, Kyushu Firework masters competition, and others. Grandstand fee includes benefits such as discount of the Kagoshima Aquarium admission fee on the day of the event.
The 19th Kagoshima Kinko Bay Summer Night Fireworks Festival will be held in Kagoshima Bay Honko District, Kagoshima city, Kagoshima Prefecture on August 24 (Saturday) 7:30 p.m. to 8:40 p.m. There will be no postponement for light rain. (In case of stormy weather, it is undecided.) The launch site is a 15 minute-walk from JR Kagoshima Station. Pay shuttle bus service from JR Kagoshima Central Station. Hanabi Fantasia FUKUOKA 2019
This one-of-a-kind light show happens at Momochi beach of Fukuoka City in 2019. The biggest attraction is the collaboration with the fireworks production consisting of a gorgeous three-tier structure, and the music. The exciting moment when light and music meet can only be experienced in the “Paid Zone,” which is ideal for watching fireworks. You can enjoy the marriage of light and sound unfolding in an overwhelming scale of about 1.5 kilometers in length. You won’t want to miss it.
The Hanabi Fantasia FUKUOKA 2019 will be held in the Sawara District, Fukuoka City, Fukuoka Prefecture on August 7, 2019 (Wednesday) from 7:30 p.m. In case of stormy weather, the event will be postponed to August 8 (Thursday), 2019. The launch site is a 20 minute-walk from Nishi-Shin Station on Airport Line of Fukuoka City Subway. 67th Kyushu Fireworks Festival sponsored by Karatsu City & Karatsu Tourism Association & Saga Shimbun Company
The festival has become a summer tradition of Karatsu City, Saga Prefecture. Approximately 200,000 visitors are watching about 6,000 fireworks lights the night sky. You can enjoy the view of the Karatsu Castle while watching the Niagara in the sky.

71th Miyazaki Summer Fireworks Festival
The 71th Miyazaki Summer Fireworks Festival features fireworks of about 10,000 shots. Fireworks such as trash fireworks and Star Mine will be launched. The Niagara's Finale over the Oyodogawa is a masterpiece. Since the main venue and the launch place are close, you can experience the light's spreading and the sound's echoing in the event. Before the fireworks, drums and dance events will also take place in the area.
The 71th Miyazaki Summer Fireworks Festival will be held in Miyazaki City, Miyazaki Prefecture on August 3, 2019 (Saturday) from 7:50 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. It will be postponed in case of stormy weather to the next day. The launch site is 10 minutes from JR Miyazaki Station by Miyazaki Kotsu Bus by Miyako City Line, and a 5-minute walk from Tachibanadori. Tamana Fireworks Festival
The largest fireworks display held in Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture produces the illusion of sound and light by music fireworks. A wide range of performances, such as wide star mine fireworks and set fireworks, are displayed.
The Tamana Fireworks Festival will be held in Tamana City, Kumamoto Prefecture on August 2, 2019 (Friday) fromm 8:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. In case of stormy weather, the event will be postponed to August 8, 2019 (Thursday). 32th Eino Gossoi Festival
Fireworks will be launched at a festival in Eicho, Minamikyushu City, Kagoshima Prefecture, which is rich in nature. At the festival, there will be Gossoi-yaki (beef, whiteleg shrimp) stage performances, and the brilliance of 2,500 fireworks decorate the finale. As it is near the venue to the launch site, it almost feels like the fireworks are falling from the above.
The 32th Eino Gossoi Festival will be held in Minamikyushu City, Kagoshima Prefecture on August 18, 2019 (Sunday) from 8:30 p.m. In case of stormy weather, the event will be postponed to August 19, 2019 (Monday). The launch site is a 10 minute-walk from JR Nishiei Station. There is traffic guidance around the venue on the day (5 p.m. to 9 p.m.). 2019 Sakurajima Hinoshima Festival of Kagoshima City's 130th Anniversary Project
In the city of 600,000 people, which has a view of Sakurajima and Kinko Bay, the festival is Kagoshima’s 130th Anniversary project. A variety of events are held at the festival such as music show, local entertainment, Sakurajima Hinotori Daiko drum performance, public proposal and others. Powerful 6,000 fireworks are launched from near the venue with laser music and will sparkle beautifully in the summer night sky and surely inspire people.
The 2019 Sakurajima Hinoshima Festival of Kagoshima City's 130th Anniversary Project will be held in Kagoshima City, Kagoshima Prefecture on July 27, 2019 (Saturday) on 8:05 p.m. to 8:35 p.m.(The festival is from 5:30 p.m.). In case of stormy weather, the event will be postponed to July 28, 2019 (Sunday). The launch site is a 10-minute walk from Sakurajima Port. First of the new Era, the 61st Sendaigawa River Fireworks Festival
This fireworks display is held at Satsumasendai City's Sendaigawa River, one of the three great rivers in Kyushu. There will be a series of explosions and simultaneous launch of fireworks, along with a combination of No. 8 Ball and Kodama fireworks. You shouldn't miss the Niagara across the Sendaigawa River, too. The fireworks are reflected on the river surface, while the other side becomes a silvery world. You can also watch the fireworks with music. Wouldn’t that be lovely?
The 61st Sendaigawa River Fireworks Festival will be held in Satsumasendai City, Kagoshima Prefecture on August 16,2019 (Friday) from 7:40 p.m. to 9:10 p.m. In case of stormy weather, the event will be postponed to August 21, 2019 (Wednesday). Ashiya Fireworks Display 2019
The event took place upstream of the Yodoyabashi Bridge on the Onga River in Fukuoka Prefecture. About 7,000 fireworks were launched continuously from the barge floating on the river. A Niagara fireworks spanning 250 across the shore was a great showstopper. Don’t you wish you were there to witness it?
The Ashiya Fireworks Display 2019 was held in Ashiya-machi, Onga-gun, Fukuoka last July 27, 2019.
