Itinerary Guide: This Place in Japan Is Known for Its Charming Mountainside Nature Spots
Take our two-day guide!
Kamikochi, located in Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture, is one of the best domestic tourist spots in Japan. Its beautiful nature has been preserved for the longest time through the local government’s efforts in limiting the number of private cars visiting the place.
Raring to see the beautiful nature spots this place has to offer? Check out our two-day itinerary below!
The Kappa Bridge offers a breathtaking view of the mountain range and crystal clear waters.
Day 1: Start your trip with a meal at Gosenjaku Kitchen.
Gosenjaku Kitchen is the restaurant next to Gosenjaku Hotel. Here, you can enjoy delicious noodles and set meals, specially prepared by the hotel chef, while admiring a spectacular view of Kappa Bridge outside the window. We highly recommend you start your trip by trying the restaurant’s Sanzoku-yaki (fried chicken) set meal (¥1,690).
You can easily see the beautiful Kappa Bridge from the restaurant’s counter.
Gosenjaku Kitchen is located at Azumi Kamikochi, Matsumoto City, Nagano Prefecture and is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekdays and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on weekends and Japanese holidays. It is open daily except from November 16 to April 16. You may contact them at +81-263-95-2111.
Go on a hike towards the beautiful Dakesawa Wetland.
Just a 15-minute walk from Gosenjaku, Dakesawa Wetland is filled with cool spring water where numerous fishes swim. Mt. Roppyaku, which has an altitude of 2,470 meters, and the trees create an elegant landscape.
The sunlight in the morning makes everything look so beautiful!
Spend the night in Kamikochi Hotel Shirakabaso.
Kamikochi Hotel Shirakabaso was founded in 1927. A new terrace, which offers a view of the Japanese Alps, has been added after the hotel’s renovation.
The hotel’s terrace was opened to the public in 2018.
A sample dinner served by the hotel. Front to back: Amuse-Bouche, Sea Break Poêlé, Fresh Mussel Potage, and Shinshu Kuroge Wagyu (Japanese Black) Steak
Guests who are staying at the hotel can also enjoy their nights by participating in the “Starry Sky Observation Tour” (¥1,000).
Since there are only a few outside lights in Kamikochi, you won’t have a hard time seeing the beautiful stars. The surrounding mountains, looming over the area and creating shadows, also help you admire the night sky better.
The lovely view from the windows of a twin room in the hotel.

At the iconic Taisho Pond, you can enjoy a stunning view of the surrounding nature. The body of water, which was formed after the eruption of Mt. Yake, is lined with plenty of trees and greenery. Depending on the season and weather conditions, you'll be able to admire the scenery with the morning mist around 7 to 8 a.m.
The pond water, acting like a mirror, reflects the Mt. Hodaka mountain range.
Snap a photo by Tashiro Pond.
Tashiro Pond is a shallow body of water that flows from Mt. Kasumizawa and Mt. Roppyaku. The sediments from Hachiemon Stream formed its current landscape over a long period of time. Make sure you take a photo of its beautiful scenery and pristine waters!
Withered, aquatic plants make up the landscape of this wetland.
